Saves Environment
Australia experiences more solar radiation per square kilometre on average than anywhere else in the world. We can tap into this large renewable source of energy with solar panels. Installing solar panels to your home or business premises not only saves you money on your energy bills but reduces your dependency on traditional electricity which is sourced from fossil fuels such as coal and natural gas. Combating greenhouse gas emissions helps reduce your carbon foot print and makes a positive impact on the environment and climate related issues.
We can all do something to make a difference. Australian households are responsible for around 12%of emissions. Greenhouse gases, hydrofluorocarbons (HFC) and other gases are released into the atmosphere and there is also an indirect contribution made through the consumption of electricity. Heating, ventilation, air conditioning, lighting and hot water systems are the main reason for these emissions.
In recent years, households have drastically reduced electricity consumption and there has been an increase in the use of rooftop solar systems. In fact, Australia leads the world with 15% of homes now having solar systems installed.
Environmental Benefits:
- Solar is a renewable energy source
- Reduction in depletion of natural resources
- Demand for fossil fuel generated energy is reduced e.g. coal and gas
- Greenhouse gas emissions are reduced
Understanding Your Energy Use
The four main energy drainers in your home are heating and cooling, appliances, water heating, and lighting. Making some small changes can save you money AND help the environment.
Energy Saver Tips
Heating and Cooling: Heat only the rooms that are in use and close the curtains/blinds (keep rooms cooler in summer and block out the drafts in winter).
Appliances: Did you know a large screen TV can use more energy than an average family fridge if used for long periods daily. Check the rating; use energy efficient appliances and turn them off at the power outlet when not in use if possible.
Water Heating: Install a water efficient showerhead and use cold water in the washing machine.
Lighting: Turn off the lights when not needed and try to choose energy efficient lighting options.
